Abattoir
The abattoir, meat processing plant and packing hall are situated in Welkom [Sparta Foods (Pty) Ltd]
- Approximately 170 000 cattle from both the Group feedlot and external farmers are slaughtered annually at the abattoir in Welkom. In addition, approximately 12 000 lambs are slaughtered annually.
- Specialised equipment is implemented to keep the slaughtering process hygienic and effective and to ensure maximum slaughter percentage.
- Post stunning and bleeding, the carcass is stimulated with low voltage to ensure a better quality of meat (by reducing pH carcass levels).
- After the day’s production, a trained night-cleaning team cleans and sanitises the slaughter hall and equipment.
- Abattoir quality control is describedhere.
- The Group makes use of its own transport and that of outside contractors to supply abattoir clients.
- A large percentage of the beef is sold to wholesalers all over South Africa, who receive large consignments of beef transported by refrigerated trucks.
- A separate services division exists at the abattoir to maintain the plant, including the extensive refrigeration system.
